Song-prayer

  Today

  Today is the first day
Of the rest of my life
And I choose to follow You
I will walk wherever You walk
And I will talk when You want me to talk
And I will be what You want me to be in You

Lord I'm sorry for the times
When I have let You down -
Not always put my trust in You
Yet You have never left my side for a single moment
Your faithfulness has seen me through

And so my prayer today
Is to offer my life
And Lord, to put my trust in You
I want to learn to love You more
And let Your light shine through me
That all may see I belong to You

Song Notes

I wrote this song on 1 January 2003. At the beginning of a New Year we often look back at our lives over the past year and promise ourselves that the next year will be different – last year we tried and failed but this year things are going to be better.

Last year my relationship with God wasn’t as good as it should have been, I didn’t grow as much as I had hoped and I wanted things to be different the next year.

This song isn’t about whether I got it right last year or not, but it is about a faithful God who is always there for us. We might have made a mess of things but he’s always ready to forgive us, wipe the slate clean and let us start all over again as if we’d never gone wrong in the first place. It doesn’t have to be New Year’s Day; any time we turn to God, whether it’s for the first time or the hundredth time, he always welcomes us back with open arms and is willing to forget the past.

“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.”
Luke 15:20 NIV
